Information on the Traditional Latin Mass

Firstly, we are so grateful to have so many people coming together from different parts of our lives to celebrate with us. We are aware that for many guests, this will be the first Traditional Latin Mass they will attend, and we would like to provide some information that might be helpful to those attending the ceremony.

The Language

The majority of the Mass will be in Latin, the historical language of the Roman Catholic Church. Some parts, such as the Epistle and Gospel readings, will be repeated in English. Additionally, the sermon, given by the priest, will be said in English.

For centuries, every Mass said throughout the world was in Latin, which lends itself to unity throughout the universal Church, something that Christ himself prayed for at the last supper. In today's world, the use of Latin reminds us of the sacred nature of the Holy Mass.

If you would like to follow along, pew booklets will be provided with an English translation of each part of the Mass.

The Rite of Marriage

In a traditional Catholic wedding, the Marriage ceremony takes place at the beginning, immediately following the processional. This portion of the service is approximately 10-15 minutes long. After exchanging vows (in English) during this Rite of Marriage, the couple will be officially married! The Wedding Mass will follow directly after this ceremony without a break in between.

Receiving Communion

If you are a practicing Catholic in a state of grace, reception of communion at a Traditional Latin Mass is always done kneeling and on the tongue. This is done out of respect for Jesus, who Catholics believe to be truly present in the Eucharist.

In the Catholic Church, before giving the individual communion, the priest says, "Corpus Domini Nostri Iesu Christi custodiat animam tuam in vitam aeternam, Amen" (translated as "May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve your soul unto life everlasting, Amen"). The priest is proclaiming the Catholic belief that this bread has become the literal Body of Christ. Therefore, reception of communion indicates that the individual shares this Catholic belief.

The priest will make a more detailed announcement regarding communion after his sermon.

Attire

Out of respect for Our Lord, we kindly ask that all our guests enter the Church in modest attire.
